Term 2 Chess has started strong at GSCC! Both our Tuesday lunch Chess Club and Thursday sport chess sessions are thriving with enthusiastic players.

Tuesday Chess Club
Our Tuesday Chess club now has over 30 members from Years 7–12, all gathering to play casual games against friends—both familiar faces and newcomers. Whether you're an accomplished player or a complete beginner, you're welcome here. New players are always encouraged to join!
Come along at the start of lunch every Tuesday to J1 (St Joseph's Function Room).
Over the coming weeks, we'll run a friendly round robin Swiss tournament to sharpen our competition skills and prepare for upcoming Gala days.

Thursday Sport Chess Sessions
Year 9 students have been enjoying Thursday afternoon chess sessions led by Sydney Academy of Chess coaches. Students learn and workshop new moves and strategies, then put them into practice through friendly matches against classmates. It's the perfect blend of instruction and hands-on play.
9 Mackillop A & B have just completed their 5 weeks of Thursday afternoon chess classes, and for the final session we held an exciting mini tournament. The students competed in 3 x 20 mins rounds of chess and using a Swiss scoring system students were paired against each other according to skill and match results. It was an excellent opportunity for students to practice all their newly acquired chess skills.
A huge congratulations to our winner Julian Nad and the two runners up, Dilan Diep and Tulo Aukusitino.
Why play Chess?
Chess is far more than a game—it's an educational powerhouse. Research shows chess improves memory, enhances problem-solving skills, increases concentration, and develops strategic planning abilities. It stimulates brain development, fosters a growth mindset, teaches patience, and can even help manage stress. We're excited about the opportunities we're offering and look forward to growing our chess community!
