At the conclusion of the Angelus at midday throughout the week, a prayer was spoken by students in a language other than English. This helped to showcase the diversity of our school community, with prayers spoken in Italian, Indonesian, Serbian, Greek and Syriac Aramaic.
The regular school bell at recess and lunch was also changed to showcase music from the cultural backgrounds of Good Samaritan students. This highlighted the incredible variety of backgrounds that our wonderful Good Samaritan community is known for.
The cultural dances that took place throughout the week were another highlight. Students from different cultural backgrounds performed traditional dances, showcasing their unique styles and customs. It was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to learn more about the cultures represented at Good Samaritan, and appreciate the beauty of these important traditions.
On Wednesday, we had a cultural BBQ during lunchtime. It was a delicious way to experience different cuisines from around the world, and raise money for Project Compassion. The aromas of chevapi, Italian sausages and chicken kebabs filled the air, and the school courtyard was buzzing with excitement as students and teachers gathered to try new foods and share stories about their cultural backgrounds.
Harmony Week is a wonderful event in our school calendar. It is a chance to recognise that everyone belongs, no matter their background, culture or creed. It’s a celebration of the vibrant threads of culture, language and tradition that make our Good Samaritan community so much more interesting than if we were all exactly the same.
I would like to thank all of the students and teachers that performed, volunteered and helped out in the lead up to and during Harmony Week. We look forward to celebrating Harmony Week again in 2027!!
