On Friday 31st July, the Year 10 and 11 Music classes attended an excursion to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to participate in workshops for Balinese gamelan and lyric writing. Lily Lazar of Year 10 music has kindly offered her notes from the day.
From the moment our class sat on the train until the time we returned home, our day was filled with adventure, joy and learning. Exploring the world of music at the Conservatorium was an exciting experience and a privilege to get to do so with my classmates and friends.
When we first arrived at the circular quay, we admired the view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge before making our way towards the Conservatorium. We first participated in a lyric writing workshop where we learnt how to utilise object writing to create colourful metaphors within our lyrics. After sharing our song titles, metaphors and ideas, I found myself extremely captivated by the lesson and left feeling inspired! In the second workshop we learnt how to play traditional Balinese music, which was a beautiful experience and lovely to learn about such a rich and wonderful culture. We left the workshops with an understanding of different perspectives and musical techniques.
Just being in a University of Sydney facility sparked thoughts of the future, watching current students walk in and out. The music excursion was a rich experience and as someone who’s passionate about music, it was like living a dream!
