Victor Chang Science Awards

On Tuesday 12 August 2025, two outstanding Year 11 Good Samaritan students, Lavin Balqa and Luiken Bruce, were honoured at the Victor Chang School Science Awards held at the ANSTO Discovery Centre in Lucas Heights. This annual event celebrates young scientists who show exceptional commitment, skill, and passion for their studies in science.

The awards aim to inspire the next generation of Australian scientists, while also recognising the vital role science plays in solving global challenges. Recipients are selected by their schools for academic excellence, curiosity, and a commitment to learning beyond the classroom.

Luiken Bruce was recognised for his outstanding achievement and positive attitude in both Biology and Chemistry. His consistent effort, ability to apply scientific concepts, and willingness to support his peers in their learning have made him a valued member of the GSCC Science community.

Lavin Balqa received her award for her dedication and enthusiasm in Biology and Investigating Science. Lavin’s inquisitive nature, perseverance, and creative approach to scientific investigations have seen her excel in both theoretical and practical aspects of her subjects.

Both students attended the ceremony at ANSTO, where they toured the world-class research facilities and met leading scientists. They also learned about the late Victor Chang’s legacy in medical research and the importance of innovation in science.

We congratulate Lavin and Luiken on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to seeing where their passion for science takes them in the future.
